About Us
Hutt Multicultural Council (HMC) was founded in 1987 and was previously known as Hutt Ethnic Council. We are an incorporated society and registered charity, run by an elected Executive Committee appointed at each AGM. We are a Member Council of Multicultural New Zealand and our patron is Lower Hutt Mayor Fauono Ken Laban. Our kaupapa is to celebrate unity in diversity and a safe Hutt City for everyone.
We work with organisations such as Hutt City Council, NZ Police and NGOs to advocate for the rights of migrant and former refugee communities in Lower Hutt, and ensure services respond to ethnic diversity. We also organise events and workshops to promote cultural diversity in the Hutt and support new arrivals to settle in Aotearoa New Zealand.
